Prem Dhoj Pradhan was a legendary Nepali singer, composer, and playback singer who left an indelible mark on Nepali music. Born on June 6, 1938, in Chautara, Nepal, Pradhan’s musical journey spanned over seven decades, during which he created timeless melodies and heartfelt lyrics that continue to resonate with audiences today.
Known as the “Golden Voice” and “King of Romantic Melodies of Nepal,” Pradhan sang in both Newari and Nepali languages, showcasing his versatility as an artist. He was the first musician to perform with a guitar in Nepal and the first Nepali singer to sing with Indian playback singer Usha Mangeshkar for the movie “Maitighar” in 1965.
Throughout his career, Pradhan recorded approximately more than 700 songs on Radio Nepal, including live broadcasting and recorded songs. His iconic songs, such as “Ghumti ma Naau,” “Namana Laaj Yestari,” “Rajamati Kumati,” and “Para Laijau Phool Haru,” have become timeless classics in Nepali music.
Despite facing challenges in his personal life, including a non-malignant polyp in his left vocal cord that required surgery, Pradhan remained dedicated to his craft. He personally funded eleven out of his sixteen discs due to a lack of sponsors, demonstrating his commitment to sharing his music with the world.
Pradhan’s contributions to Nepali music extended beyond his own work, as he mentored and inspired countless young artists throughout his career. He was known for his generosity and his willingness to share his knowledge and experience with aspiring musicians.
In recognition of his immense talent and contribution to Nepali music, Pradhan received numerous awards and honors, including the Narayan Gopal Sangeet Samman from Lunkaran-Ganga CSKM in November 2002. His passing on May 6, 2021, at the age of 82, was a profound loss for the Nepali music community, but his legacy continues to live on through the countless artists he inspired and the timeless melodies he created.
