Arun Thapa, born in January 1952 in Calcutta, India, was a renowned figure in the Nepali music scene. His father, Ganju Prasad Thapa, moved the family back to Nepal when Arun was just three years old. He grew up in Kathmandu, where he received his early education. Arun first attended a school in Gana Bahal Tole, then JP School in Chettrapati, and later studied at Turnbull High School in Darjeeling. He eventually completed his School Leaving Certificate (SLC) in Kathmandu in 1971. Despite enrolling at Prithvi Narayan Campus in Pokhara for an Intermediate in Arts degree, Arun decided to drop out to pursue his passion for music.
Arun Thapa was greatly influenced by family friends who were legendary figures in Nepali music, such as Narayan Gopal, Gopal Yonjan, and Shankher Lamichhane. While these influences shaped his early musical journey, Arun carved out his unique sound, which distinguished him from his contemporaries. He spent a significant part of his life in Jhamsikhel, Lalitpur, where his father owned property. In recognition of his contributions, a statue now stands at the corner of where his house once stood, a testament to the admiration and respect he earned from the local community.
Arun Thapa’s musical career took off while he was still in college, where he fell in love with a girl who became the muse for many of his songs. This relationship profoundly influenced his music, leading to the creation of deeply emotional and resonant songs. His career began with the hit song “Jati Maya Laye Pani,” which brought him widespread acclaim. Before becoming a household name, he worked at Nepal Bank Limited. His best friend, Deep Shrestha, was a constant companion, and the duo spent much time together.
Arun recorded numerous songs, making his debut on Radio Nepal in 1971. His unique voice and heartfelt lyrics won the hearts of many Nepali music lovers. His song “Ritu Haruma Timi Hariyali Basanta Hau” (You are the spring amongst the seasons) became particularly famous and was listed among the top ten songs globally, highlighting his international appeal.
Throughout his career, Arun Thapa released two major music albums: “Arun” and “The Best of Arun.” These albums were well-received and remain popular among Nepali music enthusiasts. Some of his most memorable songs include:

Arun Thapa’s life was not without challenges. He battled lung and liver ailments for many years. Despite his health struggles, he continued to make music that resonated with his fans. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his illnesses and passed away on July 22, 1999, in Kathmandu.
