Ciney Gurung is a celebrated Nepali singer known for her unique voice and emotional depth. From a young age, she was more interested in music than academics, often listening to the radio during school hours instead of paying attention to her lessons. Her musical journey began with a foundation in both Western music, taught in school, and traditional Nepali songs, which she learned from her father while he played the harmonium. Although she initially pursued a career as an English teacher, her passion for music never waned, and she eventually dedicated herself fully to her first love.
Gurung’s debut album, “Yo Man,” was a significant milestone in her career. Released on 2005, it received widespread acclaim from listeners across Nepal. The songs “Timro Mayama” and “Mann” were particularly well-received, thanks to her distinctive voice and heartfelt expressions. The video for “Mann,” produced with modest resources by her husband Rojesh, became a huge hit and firmly established her name in the Nepali music industry. This song holds special meaning for her as it reflects personal pain and loss, which paradoxically turned into a good omen for her career.
Her latest hit, “Mero Pyaro Manche Timi,” from the album “Reflections of Love,” further cemented her popularity among Nepali listeners. The soulful track topped the charts immediately upon release and earned her numerous awards for best female singer. Gurung, however, credits the song’s success to the collaborative efforts of lyricist Basanta Chaudhary and composer Nhyoo Bajhracharya.
In addition to singing, Gurung composes her own songs and has contributed music to the film “Goodbye Kathmandu,” making her the second female Nepali music director after Shanti Thatal. She is also an ambassador for Children for Green New Nepal, an organization focused on environmental issues.
However, she remains hopeful and inspired by the success of other female artists like Aruna Lama, Tara Devi, Ani Choying Dolma, and Anju Panta. For Gurung, the greatest reward of her musical career is the love and admiration of her fans, which helps her overlook the hardships and continue her journey in music.
