Gyanu Rana, a famous singer and reality show judge from Nepal, was born on October 3, 1949, in Thamel, Kathmandu. She’s well-known for her hit songs like “Siri Ma Siri Ni Kanchha” and “Manchhe Ko Maya Yaha,” which she sang alongside the legendary Narayan Gopal.
Rana’s family has deep musical roots. Her dad, Dharmaraj Thapa, was a respected poet and folk singer who worked at Radio Nepal. Her mom, Savitri Thapa, was passionate about promoting Nepalese folk songs and culture.
Growing up in Batulechaur, Pokhara, Rana completed her early education there before moving to Kathmandu for higher studies. She graduated from Padma Kanya School in 1965.
Music has been a part of Rana’s life since she was a child, inspired by her father. She’s recorded over 2,000 songs in various languages like Nepali, Hindi, Urdu, Bhojpuri, Maithili, and Newari. Her songs have been played on Radio Nepal, local FM channels, Nepal Television, and other TV channels for more than 40 years.
Besides her singing career, Rana worked at the Royal Nepal Academy from 1970 to 2006. She started as an Artist (Music) and rose to become the Director (Music). She’s also judged many national music competitions and performed at cultural and international concerts in countries like China, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, and the USSR.
Rana has received numerous awards and honors throughout her illustrious career, including the Prabal Gorkha Daxin Bahu IV from the Government of Nepal, the Indra Rajya Laxmi Puraskar, the Rastriya Pratibha Puraskar, and the Dharma Raj Svitri Thapa Lok Sahitya Puraskar, among others. In 2055 BS, Radio Nepal recognized her as a “Famous Class Singer,” acknowledging her significant contribution to Nepali music.
